“Fikirtepe of Art” Exhibition Highlights the Historical Continuity of Art Education at Atatürk Faculty of Education
The exhibition titled “Fikirtepe of Art” was held at Avni Akyol Fine Arts High School Fatma Tekinalp Art Gallery between February 10 - 28, 2025.
The exhibition drew attention to the historical continuity of art and education by bringing together the works of artists-academics working in Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education Fine Arts Education Department of Painting and Art Education from 1968 to the present.
“Fikirtepe of Art” Exhibition is inspired by the cultural heritage of Fikirtepe, one of the oldest settlements in Istanbul and known as a center for the exchange of ideas. As a continuation of this heritage, Atatürk Faculty of Education's deep-rooted history dating back to Dârülmuallimîn-i Rüşdî, which was founded in 1848 and laid the foundations of the modern education system, is emphasized.
The Department of Fine Arts Education, Department of Fine Arts Education, Department of Painting and Art Education, affiliated to Atatürk Faculty of Education, has been making significant contributions in the field of art education since 1968, pioneering the training of many artists-educators. The fact that Fikirtepe has historically been a production center gains a new dimension with the art education given here and art and thought intersect.
On February 10, 2025 at 14:00, the opening ceremony started with the speech of Aynur ERGÜR, the principal of Avni Akyol Fine Arts High School. The opening speeches were made by Prof. Dr. Seyfi KENAN, Dean of Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. F. Evren DAŞDAĞ, Head of the Department of Painting and Art Education and Prof. Dr. Süleyman Saim TEKCAN.
In his opening speech, Dean Prof. Dr. Seyfi KENAN drew attention to the origin of the name “Fikirtepe”, which is adjacent to the neighborhood in Göztepe, where our school is located, and drew attention to the existence of historical narratives that Namık Kemal named this place Fikirtepe when he discussed the ideas of freedom and constitutionalism with his friends from time to time on this deserted hill, which was known for its calmness at that time, away from the power of Abdülhamid II. He emphasized that art does not only pursue the beautiful, but also the good and the right. Prof. KENAN underlined that there is goodness in beauty and truth in goodness and gave examples from the works of various artists who grew up in different cultures and geographies; for this reason, he stated that art has healing power.
Avni Akyol Fine Arts High School students, artists, art educators and art lovers attended the opening ceremony.
The exhibition brought together the cultural heritage of Fikirtepe and academic and artistic production on a common ground. The exhibition, which ended on February 28, 2025, attracted great interest from the audience.
